Press Release: Ghana Cricket Intensifies Preparation For African Women Tournament

The Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) embarked on a two-day intensive training and selection programme for girls across the country, from 17-18 August 2015 in Obuasi, to select players to form the nucleus of the national Female Cricket team.

This is the 5th Annual Girls Invitational Tournament held by the GCA under its women cricket development programme.
Thirty-six (36) girls were identified from cricket academies, playing schools and communities in the Ashanti, Brong -Ahafo, Central, Western and Greater –Accra Regions. GCA coaches will take the girls through basic drills on batting, bowling and fielding to be followed by direct assessments in trial matches.

Eighteen (18) players will be finally selected by the GCA Technical Team at the end of the exercise and then camped in preparation for the impending North West Africa Cricket Council Women’s (NWACC) tournament to be held in The Gambia from 25th October to 1st November 2015. Cricket playing countries in the sub-region who will participate include Cameroun, Nigeria, Mali, Morocco and Sierra Leone.

This will be Ghana’s first participation in an international female cricket competition and reflects GCA efforts for the development of girls cricket in the country.

It is expected that, the National Sports Authority and the Ministry of Youth and Sports will provide the necessary support for Ghana female cricketers to participate in this epoch event for Africa.

It is also hoped that corporate sponsors will also endorse these young ladies striving to win laurels in cricket for Ghana.
