US-based Ghanaian rapper Gary Letsgetit Sticks has accused his childhood
friend, Joey B of purloining the 2013 hit song ‘Strawberry Ginger’ from
him.
Gary, who said he co-produced the song with the ‘Tonga’ hitmaker, told Anita Erskine and Bola Ray
on the Starr Entertainment News segment of the Starr Drive he expected
his partner at the time to “respect their friendship well enough to at
least” give him credit as a co-owner of the rights to the song when he
planned to go ahead and feature others.
The version of the song released in 2013 featured D-Black of the Black Avenue entertainment and rapper, EL.
Sticks said he is hurt because both his financial and creative investments on the tune were not “even mentioned”.
“I paid for the beats, I paid for the studio
time. And when it was done, we took the beats home and wrote our
verses… and when we worked on it, I didn’t even say anywhere it was my
song, I always said it’s our song. Even though I paid for it,” he
lamented.
“I don't need recognition for nothing I just want Joey B to show me that respect,” Gary stressed.
Strawberry Ginger, originally a two-verse song was recorded and titled Ice Cream Girl
featuring Gary Sticks, Joey B and EL with the cost of music production
and promotion solely footed by the former not long before Joey B signed
onto his current record label and replaced Gary's verse with D-Black and
further, added a 2nd verse to cap a complete banger.
With Black Avenue Music, a well-established brand in mainstream Ghanaian music, the remake Strawberry Ginger enjoyed massive airplay since its release.
Reacting to Gary’s claims, Joey B, told Bola
Ray he accepts his wrong doing by not acknowledging his friend and is
ready to do so given the opportunity.
