Dumsor to get worse as GRIDCo replaces over-aged equipment

Electricity consumers must brace themselves for more power cuts as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) is currently replacing all over-aged equipment at its major substations across the country to enhance the substations’ capacity and operational reliability for the benefit of power consumers.

The works include the re-configuration of some of these substations, installation of additional transformers, replacement of switch-gears, construction or expansion of Control Rooms, as well as the provision of capacitor banks and standby generators at some major substations.

An official statement issued on Monday by GRIDCo mentioned Achimota, Kumasi, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Dunkwa, Tamale, Sunyani, Techiman, Aflao, Winneba, as some of the affected substations.

The statement added: “As a result of these on-going works, which are planned for completion by July 2016, there may be short interruptions in power supply to consumers, in order to create a safe working environment for the workers, outside the regular load shedding programme”.

It said GRIDCo requests the support of consumers during this period and assured the public that adequate measures have been put in place to minimize the outages, which might result from these works.

“GRIDCo regrets any inconvenience that may be caused to consumers during this period,” it added.
