Homeless Student Earns Place To Study Law At Cambridge After Getting Straight A*s

Homeless student earns place to study law at Cambridge after getting straight A*s
A homeless student who slept on his friends’ sofas while taking his A-levels has been accepted to study law at Cambridge after getting straight A*s. Jacob Lewis, 22, dropped out of school aged 17 and returned as a mature student to Coleg Y Cymoedd in Aberdare after three years working in debt management.

Coleg y Cymoedd supported him with its student hardship fund and temporarily housed him in a hotel, but Jacob still found himself homeless for periods during the year and said he was ‘sofa surfing’ as he juggled study and work.

‘It’s been a hard fight,’ he told The Independent. ‘At the start of this year I was working 24 hours a week to support my studies and make ends meet, I was barely eating.
‘At one point I became homeless and had to start sofa surfing. Having a permanent home with my family wasn’t an option.’
Jacob spent up to 12 hours a day in the college library and said after getting his results that the time was worth it.
