Wereko Brobbey drags GBC, others to court over TV license fees
Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, founder of Ghana’s first private radio station, has sued state-broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and three others over the re-introduction of the TV license fees.
The other defendants are the National Media Commission, the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association(GIBA) and the Attorney General.
The former Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Volta River Authority(VRA) is seeking an order of perpetual injunction which will restrain GBC, from collecting the TV license fees effective August 1, 2015.
Mr Wereko Brobbey earlier contested the National Media Commission and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation(GBC) from implementing the TV license fees in a campaign dubbed “#suspendtvlicence”.
He’s also among other reliefs sought to challenge the formula for sharing the fees expected to be collected by the first defendant insisting it is unlawful.
He says the move is a breach of LI 226, NRCD 89 as well as NLCD 226.
Dr. Wereko-Brobby is seeking eight reliefs.
